Private Label Denim Programmes
Private label jeans for retailers: what to prepare, which elements can be customized, and the steps from artwork to delivery. Details in writing.
Overview
Private label means the buyer sells the jeans under its own brand. The factory produces the garment to the buyer's specification, and the buyer controls the labels, hang tags, packaging and, within agreed limits, the design details. Private label suits retailers that want a denim range with their own identity and that can commit to a stable assortment over a season or more.
What can be customized
- Woven and printed labels, including main labels, size labels and care labels.
- Hang tags, swing tickets and carton marking.
- Back patch, rivets, buttons and stitching color, within the available hardware range.
- Wash development for a new shade, subject to a development lead time to be confirmed in writing.
- Packaging, including polybag design and folding format.
Changes to the fit, the fabric or the construction are assessed case by case and may affect the price and lead time.
Steps from artwork to delivery
- Brief. The buyer sends the brand brief, target styles, size mix and quantity range.
- Artwork and label proof. The buyer supplies artwork in the format the factory specifies. A printed proof or a physical label proof is approved in writing before production.
- Fit and wash approval. A fit sample and a wash sample are produced and approved. Any changes are recorded in the specification sheet.
- Pre-production approval. The buyer signs the final specification, including labels, trims and packaging.
- Production and inspection. Production follows the approved specification. Inspection points are agreed in advance.
- Packing and delivery. Goods are packed with the approved labels and packaging, and shipped under the agreed delivery terms.
What the buyer should prepare
- Final artwork files for every label and hang tag, with color references where possible.
- A written brand brief covering target customers, price positioning and the styles to be included.
- Labelling and compliance requirements for the target market, including any content the buyer must print.
- A forecast of the order mix and the expected repeat orders, so that the factory can plan materials.
Minimum quantities and lead times
Private label programs have their own minimum order quantities and lead times, which differ from standard orders because of label and packaging set-up. The minimum order quantity, set-up charges and lead times are to be confirmed in writing for each program.
